This project proposes a new model for emotional well-being, addressing the growing gap between emotional experience and expression among young adults navigating early careers, urban lifestyles, and increasing social pressure. While individuals are expected to be resilient and self-sufficient, many lack a safe and immediate way to release emotions without concern for judgment, misinterpretation, or burdening others.
The design introduces a non-verbal emotional interaction system centered on a sculptural tabletop device that exists as both an ambient object and a quiet emotional companion. In its resting state, the device integrates seamlessly into the environment, emitting a soft, indirect glow. Light is reflected through an inner surface rather than projected outward, creating a calm and non-intrusive atmosphere while reinforcing its presence as a passive yet supportive object.
When emotional release is needed, the device provides an immediate, low-threshold outlet. Users can speak freely toward the interface without structured input, wording constraints, or social exposure. This interaction intentionally separates expression from communication. Instead of transmitting in real time, the system captures emotional signals and introduces a delay, allowing space for reflection and emotional stabilization. This temporal buffer reduces the risk of impulsive sharing and preserves emotional dignity.
Following the interaction, the device supports emotional regulation through subtle environmental feedback, including adaptive light and sound responses. These changes are designed to gently guide the user toward a calmer state without demanding attention or cognitive effort. Over time, users can also revisit, adjust, or neutralize previously expressed signals, reinforcing a sense of control over transient emotions.
A lightweight digital layer complements the physical device by managing connections, state mapping, and optional reflection. It avoids the complexity and performative nature of conventional communication platforms, focusing instead on privacy, clarity, and emotional safety.
By enabling expression without obligation and connection without disruption, this project reframes emotional care as a quiet, continuous presence in everyday life. It demonstrates how industrial design can move beyond functionality to support psychological well-being in a subtle, respectful, and non-intrusive way.
