Open Arms Health Care provides home-based support services for the intellectually and developmentally disabled (IDD) community in Western Pennsylvania. The uniform program serves more than 100 caregivers and support staff working directly in clients’ homes. The collection includes performance polos, softshell, utility vests, and caps in a teal and black brand palette. Garments are constructed from Dri-Fit, bleach-resistant, and stain-resistant fabrics and include integrated badge pockets, reflective safety elements and functional storage. The program introduces a non-clinical, activewear-inspired look that maintains professionalism while supporting mobility and comfort in demanding caregiving environments.

The goal was to replace traditional medical scrubs with a more approachable and professional appearance appropriate for home-care environments. Leadership identified that clinical uniforms could create discomfort when caregivers enter a client’s personal space. The program therefore balances performance, comfort, and brand identity through a contemporary activewear aesthetic. Branding was intentionally simplified by replacing the full company name with the program’s three-star symbol, creating a lifestyle-driven, retail-inspired look that helps caregivers feel confident and professional while presenting a calm, approachable image. Durable technical fabrics, flexible silhouettes, and inclusive sizing from S–5XL support physically demanding caregiving tasks while maintaining a consistent professional identity aligned with the organization’s mission of dignity, compassion, and community-based care.

The design process included employee feedback and leadership input to understand daily caregiving needs. Staff feedback highlighted the importance of mobility, storage, durability, and easy identification. Designers analyzed the realities of home-based care environments, where staff perform physically active tasks and interact closely with clients in personal spaces. This research informed features such as moisture-wicking fabrics, stain and bleach resistance, functional pockets for tools, and integrated badge pockets. The resulting garments combine healthcare practicality with a non-clinical aesthetic appropriate for community-based care.

The program was rolled out across the caregiving team as a unified uniform collection. Staff quickly adopted the new garments due to improved comfort, mobility, and modern appearance. The non-clinical aesthetic helps caregivers build more relaxed relationships with clients in their homes while maintaining a clear professional identity. Leadership reported strong positive feedback from employees and clients.
