CHALLENGES FACING AUSTRALIA
-c.750k Australians are treated for skin cancer annually, with melanoma accounting for 80% of all diagnosed cancers.
-66% of Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70.
-Despite a population of >25m, there are only 600 practicing dermatologists in Australia, meaning referral waiting times can be up to eight months.

INVENTIVE SOLUTION
AI MEDI SCAN is a healthtech start-up on a mission to deliver accurate, affordable, at-home skin cancer detection via a combination of cutting-edge technologies. Using a smartphone camera and mobile app, in combination with AI and a blockchain-enabled health records platform, AI MEDI SCAN is set to transform skin cancer care in Australia.
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
AI MEDI SCAN is based on the following tech:
-Medical records platform: AI MEDI SCAN utilises the cloud and blockchain to allow medical professionals to safely and securely access/record/share patient information.
-AI engine: Under development with University Technology Sydney (national leader in AI), the AI Engine will be trained on millions of data points to achieve enhanced image recognition (based on the Melanoma Institute of Australia’s ‘Melanoma Risk Calculator’).
-Mobile app: User journeys are managed via an app, which allows users to conduct skin scans, set scan reminders, receive diagnoses, and schedule medical referrals.
-Smartphone attachment: With biophotonic imaging technology, users can enhance their smartphone’s capabilities and undertake at-home scans using (aiming to achieve Therapeutic Goods Administration approval with 12 months).
WHY THIS DESIGN MATTERS
-Improved information sharing: AI MEDI SCAN’s platform facilitates secure interdepartmental/inter-clinician sharing of patient information.
-Reducing demand: AI-based diagnosis substantially reduces the need for biopsies, which will radically reduce referral numbers and thus reduce waiting list lengths and overall wait-times.
-Accessibility: With cost-effective, at-home testing, AI MEDI SCAN empowers individuals to take ownership of their care. Additionally, individuals living in rural areas (who are under-served and suffer worse health outcomes) will have better care access.
-Improved health outcomes: Earlier cancer detection, optimised triage of high/low-risk cases, higher volumes of patients diagnosed, enhanced clinical collaboration – all these factors will drastically improve health outcomes for cancer patients across Australia.
